A couple of weeks ago we went to see Alison Moyet (again).
At 63 her strength pulses from her. Her voice, her writing, her power are, to this 53 year old woman, a joy to behold.
Like a vitamin shot.
Between songs she talked about ageing, of finally feeling sure of yourself in the world. About becoming impervious to the opinions of others. To hearing and trusting your own voice, centring your own creativity.
She puts into words (and song) something I have felt since turning 50. There is a power in ageing for women. In society ageing is sanitised, romanticised or ignored like periods, pregnancy, the clitoris.
It is powerful knowledge. Something to embroider on a hanky or paint on a scrap of card.
A piece of wisdom to pass on in the toilet queue to all those women who don’t yet know that they are remarkable.
