Like many people (who grew up in the UK in the 70’s with a crush on Felicity Kendal) I have ‘Good Life’ fantasies of domestic scale self-sufficiency.
This week I harvested the Elderberries, heavy and ripe with juice.
I’m going to make a jar of winter tonic to keep the flu away, and to give us a connection back to these high days of summer, even when the rain and winds blow cold and keep us tucked up inside.
I’m a fan of tonics. As a child my dad would make a hot toddy of whiskey and lemon at the first sign of a cold. It was the 70’s so a child taking a quick shot of medicinal whisky was totally fine.
My tonic will have ginger, lemon, rosemary, honey from a friend’s hives and my beautiful berries. I’m almost looking forward to it.
Just in case you’ve not heard of the Good Life it was a British sitcom that aired from 1975 - 1978 on the BBC. Felicity Kendal played Barbara Good, who along with her husband Tom, gave up work to turn their suburban plot into a small holding. It was weekly viewing in our house and is where I learned to appreciate a woman in dungarees.
