One of my favourite things at this time of year is to have a pile of bulging rubbish bags tucked away at the back of the garden out of sight. Each bag stuffed full of beautiful autumn leaves. Over the coming year their damp decay will magically turn each bag into a treasure haul of leaf mould.
If you’re not a gardener, then leaf mould nourishes the soil like nothing else. Cruelly misbranded it really should have been called leaf gold.
The leaf mould will not be ready for a year, but the magic (and the fun) starts with the collecting of the leaves. Raking up bundles of gold, red and orange on a crisp sunny day.
So far this year I have three full bags, a great haul. Three bags of autumn magic tucked away like treasure.
